Are you looking for a special Valentine’s day treat for your Valentine this year? Are they chocolate lovers? If so, why not surprise them with chocolate whoopie pies? Whether you are making them for your sweetheart, or your family they are sure to be a huge hit!

What’s the Difference Between a Whoopie Pie and a Moon Pie?

Before we talk about this whoopie pie recipe, let’s talk about the differences between a whoopie pie and a moon pie because many people mistakenly think that they are the same and they are not.

A whoopie pie is a sandwich cookie that is softer and more cake-like than a moon pie. The filling in a whoopie pie is creamy and kind of like icing, and there is a lot of it. A moon pie is made of a graham cracker crust, with a filling made of marshmallows.

The moon pie is then dipped in a chocolate coating, and the taste is a lot like a s’more, especially if you eat them up. Now that you know the difference between a whoopie pie and a moon pie, let’s talk about how to make some whoopie pies!

How to Make Mickey Chocolate Whoopie Pies

To make your Minnie chocolate whoopie pies you will need flour, cocoa powder, salt, baking soda, shortening, dark brown sugar, softened sweet cream butter, vanilla extract, milk, and an egg.

For the filling of your Minnie chocolate whoopie pies you will need powdered sugar, softened sweet cream butter, vanilla extract, heavy cream, and kosher salt.

For the garnish you will need melted chocolate chips, Valentine’s sprinkles, a disposable piping bag, and red icing bows to make some of the whoopie pies look like Minnie Mouse.

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl whisk together your flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. In a stand mixer, beat together the brown sugar, shortening, and butter until it is smooth. Now add in the egg and vanilla and beat it in.

Alternate between the flour and milk and add gradually until combined. Scoop the batter into the piping bag and cut a larger tip. Pipe a large circle on the baking sheet and then pipe two smaller circles for the ears. Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes until they are fluffy and bounce back. Let them cool on the pan for 5 minutes, and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

For the filling use a stand mixer to beat together the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and butter together. Beat for an additional five minutes until it is thick. Scoop the filling into a different piping bag. Flip each cookie over so the flat side is up.

Pipe filling onto the bottom of the whoopie pies and put the top on. Drizzle melted chocolate on the top and cover with Valentine’s day sprinkles. Put icing bows on some of your Minnie whoopie pies.
